Contractor was a classical ballet student in Toronto. Additionally, she excelled academically. When she was 16, after nearly 10 years of dance Contractor decided to take up acting as a profession. She was awarded a full scholarship to attend the University of Toronto after graduating. She earned a master's degree in theater and also double-majored in psychology and social science. Contractor auditioned at the prestigious Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada, for Pericles. After an entire year, she was given the role of lead. The play received rave reviews and her performances in the 92 shows performed this play, which was named as the best production by Canadian reviewers in 2002. Contractor was given the chance to join Stratford's conservatory, where the top eight men and four women are accepted for a course lasting 20 weeks in classical theatre, which she gladly accepted. Contractor's place in the following stage season was securing and she won the role in the play as Hermia.
